あなたの研究テーマについて教えてください。What is your research theme?
I'm studying small RNA(sRNA) pathways in ticks.Ticks are hematophagous arthropods that transmit diverse human and animal pathogens to their hosts during blood-feeding, resulting in tick-borne diseases that cause public health concerns and economic losses.
sRNA pathways have been demonstrated in many organisms to play important roles in developmental control and immune response.
We found there are abundant sRNAs that are dependent on a gene called RNA-dependent RNA Polymerase (RdRP), which is common in plants but lost in many animals including mammals and most insects, hinting at novel RdRP-mediated regulatory mechanisms in ticks (Feng et al. PLOS ONE, 2023). The first-ever validated target for tick RdRP-dependent sRNAs is an immune-related gene called Dsor1.
The apparent functional importance of these sRNA species that have been overlooked in past studies necessitates the comprehensive study of the tick sRNA repertoire. Uncovering new sRNA pathways in ticks could enhance our understanding of the evolutionary diversity of sRNA pathways and potentially contribute to the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases.

I decided to pursue a doctoral program because I want to delve deeper into research and continue contributing to the field. I thoroughly enjoyed the research experience during my master’s program and realized that I’m not ready to leave the research journey just yet.
A doctoral program will allow me to expand my understanding and expertise in this area through more advanced study and exploration.
