あなたの研究テーマについて教えてください。What is your research theme?

My research theme is “Paradigm Shift Using AI to Classify "Estrus Cycle" in Mice from Image Data”.
Our research aims to develop advanced deep learning models, particularly CNNs, for classifying the estrus cycle stages in mice from image data. The estrus cycle is very important in animal-based research, significantly affects hormonal levels which impacts on experiment results. So accurate classification of the estrus cycle is essential to minimize variability and enhance reproducibility in biological, medical, and pharmaceutical research.

Our research work involves:
1. Developing data collection guidelines and collaborating with researchers from two different institutions to gather labeled RGB image data for "Estrus" and "Non-estrus" stages and validate the whole dataset by our principal observer who has expertise on it.
2. Then fine-tuning the pre-trained models and developing a scratched model to improve classification accuracy and reduce observer bias.
3. Finally we will focus on developing a user-friendly interface to assist researchers to include female mice alongside male mice in their research experiment. This will address a significant gap in the research field to date.
As for the academic and societal impact, our research will make it easier and more accurate to classify the estrus cycle in female mice, which is an important but often overlooked factor in scientific studies. Developing data collection guidelines and validating the dataset with an expert, we ensure reliable and high-quality data. Fine-tuning advanced models will help to improve accuracy and reduce human errors in identifying the estrus cycle.
The final user-friendly tool will encourage researchers to include female mice in their experiments. This addresses a long-standing gap in research, where female mice are often excluded due to the complexity of their hormonal cycles and variations in results.
Including female mice in the experiments will lead to more balanced and comprehensive studies, improving the quality of research in biology, medicine, and pharmaceuticals.

なぜ博士課程へ進学しましたか?Why did you decide to pursue a doctoral program?

As soon as I graduated (masters in pharmaceutical sciences), I started working at a pharmaceutical company for eight years, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with many physicians. This experience helped me recognize the critical role of data in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. During my time in the pharmaceutical sector, I was inspired by advancements in new drug development and data science, which motivated me to learn basic programming skills.

As I progressed, I realized the need to deepen my knowledge and achieve advanced expertise in data science, particularly its applications in biological, medical, and pharmaceutical sciences.
This led me to choose Japan, a technologically advanced country, and NAIST, a research-focused institute, an ideal place to pursue my goals.
