My research focuses on protein oligomerization, the process by which multiple protein molecules assemble into larger complexes. This mechanism plays a fundamental role in biological systems, regulating enzyme activity, enabling cell-to-cell communication, and providing structural support.
In particular, I investigate the oligomerization of hemoglobin (Hb), a tetrameric oxygen carrier protein in red blood cells composed of four polypeptide chains, each containing a heme group. Previous studies suggest that Hb can associate into higher-order oligomers beyond its tetrameric state, which may affect its oxygen-binding capacity and contribute to certain diseases. However, the detailed mechanism of hemoglobin oligomerization remains unclear.
To address this gap, my research aims to reveal the structural basis of Hb oligomerization through three-dimensional structural analysis. To date, I have successfully purified and crystallized a prospective dimer derived from the Hb tetramer and evaluated its structural properties. The determination of its atomic structure is expected to be determined by X-ray crystallography.
The outcomes of this study are expected to provide new insights into the fundamental principles of protein–protein interactions. In the long term, these findings may contribute to advances in protein engineering and the development of novel functional biomaterials.
なぜ博士課程へ進学しましたか?Why did you decide to pursue a doctoral program?

My interest in science began at an early age, particularly during elementary school, when I developed a deep curiosity about natural phenomena, especially those related to living organisms. Through reading books, I often found myself asking questions such as how plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis, how animals adapt to their environments, and how human organs function.
As I advanced in my studies, I gradually found answers to many of the questions. This experience made me realize that knowledge not only satisfies curiosity but also provides the foundation for creating innovations that benefit society. In addition, I have also been inspired by scientists whose research has led to the discoveries with profound societal impact, which further deepened my love for science and learning.
During my university education, I chose to study biology because of its direct relevance to human life and its potential to elucidate how biological systems function within us. Through this path, I gained valuable experience in molecular biology research, particularly in areas related to infectious diseases, genetic disorders, and cancer. These experiences were both valuable and eye-opening, as they highlighted the complexity of biological systems and the many challenges that remain unresolved. This realization inspired me to pursue a deeper understanding of life at the molecular level and motivated me to engage in more advanced research to address these challenges.
I decided to continue my academic journey by pursuing a doctoral degree, driven by my passion for scientific inquiry. Through this path, I aim to deepen my knowledge, refine my expertise, and further develop the skills and experiences necessary to broaden my scientific impact. I am particularly drawn to Japan for its globally recognized research excellence, supportive academic environment, and strong commitment to innovation. I believe that conducting my doctoral research in Japan will not only provide advanced training and international exposure but also enable me to make meaningful contributions to both science and society.
