My research interests lie in computer vision for medical AI. Currently, I am continuing the research direction I pursued during my Master’s degree, focusing on continual learning and federated learning in computational pathology, particularly whole-slide image (WSI) analysis. Since WSIs are gigapixel-sized, training and evaluating AI models on them is highly time-consuming. Therefore, it is important to explore methods for continually learning a unified, general AI model that can be expanded to multiple related WSI tasks. Moreover, because WSIs are medical data subject to strict privacy regulations, sharing them across institutions is often challenging. To address this, I am investigating federated learning approaches where AI models can be trained separately at each institution. Instead of sharing raw data, institutions can contribute model weights, which can then be aggregated into a unified model on the cloud for more general WSI analysis.

なぜ博士課程へ進学しましたか?Why did you decide to pursue a doctoral program?

25-47-02

I have two main purposes for pursuing a PhD. First, I aspire to engage in professional academic activities, such as giving lectures and contributing to education in the future. Second, I wish to continue the research direction that I was unable to fully pursue during my Master’s program.

A PhD provides me with the opportunity to dedicate myself fully to research, fostering creativity and enabling me to produce high-quality work that benefits the scientific community. At NAIST, the modern facilities, along with the guidance of top-tier and approachable professors who are willing to address students’ concerns, create an excellent environment for research and academic growth. Therefore, pursuing my PhD here represents an important and meaningful step in my academic journey.

Graniteの支援で役立っている・助かっていることを教えてください。Please share what has been helpful or beneficial through the support provided by Granite.

The support provided is very helpful, as it covers tuition fees and offers a living allowance. This allows me to focus entirely on my research and studies without worrying about financial difficulties. Furthermore, being a Granite Scholar also provides opportunities to participate in additional activities, such as auditing workshops and attending lectures delivered by distinguished professors.

将来の目標、もしくはあなたが胸に秘めた野望があればぜひ教えてください。Please share your future goals or any ambitions you hold close to your heart.

In the future, after obtaining my PhD degree, I plan to return to my home country and become a lecturer. I hope to apply the knowledge and experience I gain at NAIST, Japan, to support and advance research activities at the Vietnamese universities where I will work.

Although pursuing a PhD is not easy, as it requires a high level of self-study and independent research skills, it provides tremendous opportunities to grow, not only in knowledge but also in essential life skills. However, along this journey, one may experience loneliness and moments of disappointment. Therefore, it is important to be mentally prepared to overcome these challenges.
