あなたの研究テーマについて教えてください。What is your research theme?

For my research, I am now interested in learning about the molecular mechanism underlying microridge formation. A microridge is a small, long lateral structure that looks like a maze on the surface of a mucosal surface cell. Scientists discovered this arrangement in various organisms, including cornea tissue, fish gill rakers, tongue papillae, zebrafish periderm cells, and monkey cheek cells. Despite the well-presented structure of the microridge, scientists are currently investigating the functions it serves and the process that controls its formation. Currently, scientists believe that microridge may enhance tissue surface area and operate as a liquid retention, as evidenced by studies in mucus on zebrafish bodies and water droplets on cactus spine surfaces.

My research focuses on the protein-protein interaction that drives cell protrusion, resulting in this long-lateral protrusion microridge. We tried to imitate the mechanism in microvilli and filopodia production in order to determine the mechanism in microridges. We assumed that I-Bar, a protein located in the membrane, had a function in generating cell curvature. We are still investigating what other proteins may create a complex to build this process. Throughout this training, I enjoyed learning new things about proteomics that I had never encountered before. I discovered that my experience in this field has provided me with a new understanding of how the biological process operates fundamentally.

At the moment, I would like to delve more into this field with the hope that this knowledge would be beneficial for me, if I would engage in the industrial sector after my training. I would be thrilled if this fundamental science that I am learning could be turned into some applied discipline that is useful for the advancement of society.

なぜ博士課程へ進学しましたか?Why did you decide to pursue a doctoral program?

Pursuing a doctoral program was actually never in my thoughts at first. Back then I had no idea what research it was. But the turning light motivated me as I had my one year preparation for my degree with my colleague. I met this one teacher who always told a story on what was happening in the world and how science makes it more advanced, which triggered my curiosity.

Science has always been my favourite subject at school. I enjoyed learning about the natural world around me. Although it may be tough for me to fully comprehend what, why, and how a particular phenomenon occurs, this would never prevent me from grasping the knowledge at first. Day by day, I began to connect the dots of what I knew and what I learned.

I started to be more serious about science, when I pursued in Biological Sciences as for my bachelor's degree. I sparked an interest in molecular genetics. Then I earned a master's degree in molecular genetics. This is the stage where I learn more about the ins and outs of research.

However, a quest for knowledge is never sufficient. I decided to set a foot for PhD studies with the goal of acquiring any essential skills of research to explore further. No words can explain how grateful I am for this opportunity.

"We don't want our students to be burdened with financial things "
I can still clearly recall this statement made by Prof. Dr. Satoko Maki at my interview with NAIST two years ago. This is a serious problem that many students encounter before deciding to continue their studies.

One of the things that keeps me motivated to pursue doctorate studies is having financial support, especially as an international student. I am quite delighted to have been awarded the NAIST Granite Scholarship. Since this scholarship covered my tuition and monthly stipend, I can honestly put aside my concerns about money and concentrate solely on my studies.

Aside from that, the most exciting aspect of this NAIST Granite also provided an opportunity to improve my research skills for their many programs. Every scholar will be given the opportunity to build out-of-campus talents, such as International Lab Stays, Global Visionary Bridges, and provide guidance to set a career after graduation. NAIST Granite scholarships provide more than just financial assistance; they also provide an opportunity for students to realize their full potential in a variety of ways.

将来の目標、もしくはあなたが胸に秘めた野望があればぜひ教えてください。Please share your future goals or any ambitions you hold close to your heart.

I hope to be an expert in my niche and able to apply the knowledge I've gained to make a meaningful contribution while remaining open to acquiring new insights along the way.
